Clarifying insurance cover when administering Naloxone

Understanding cover for naloxone administration

After discussion with our medical indemnity clients, we want to clarify when our Medical Indemnity policies provide cover for administering naloxone as an emergency medical treatment to reverse the life-threatening effects of a known or suspected opiate (narcotic) overdose.

VMIA’s Medical Indemnity policies provide indemnity for naloxone administration (intramuscular injection and/or nasal spray) to a patient or person by anyone acting on behalf of an organisation insured through VMIA. This includes clinical workers, non-clinical workers, and volunteers.

VMIA advises anyone administering Naloxone should follow the guidance from the Commonwealth Department of Health and Aged Care(opens in a new window).
